If you’re like many people across the US, the winter you experienced this year was especially harsh. So now that spring is here and the weather is finally showing signs of warming up, you’re probably quite happy to say goodbye to the harsh cold until next year. Because this was such a hard winter, if you look around the exterior of your home, you may notice that things are in less than ideal shape.
Although that can put a bit of a damper on your excitement for spring, the good news is it’s just going to take some work to get everything back into shape.
Whether you decide to do the work yourself or hire a House Doctors handyman to complete your spring home maintenance tasks, here are five you’ll definitely want to include on your to-do list:
Move or Get Rid of Firewood
During the winter, it makes sense to have wood right next to your house. The last thing you want is to have to plod through the cold in order to get additional wood. But now that your need for fires is winding down, it’s time to move any wood that’s left over. Doing this will ensure you don’t start attracting a nest of pests. If you plan on keeping any of your wood, put it in a spot that’s away from your home and at least eighteen inches off the ground.
Take a Look at the Roof
It’s important to see if any of the shingles on your roof were damaged or lost during the course of winter. Any shingles that show signs of being loose, buckled or cracked need to be replaced. Since this type of work requires an experienced professional, be sure to call House Doctors about any roof repairs you need done.
Inspect Wood Trim
As you’re going around your house and looking for damage, be sure to keep an eye out for damaged wood trim. In addition to visually inspecting trim, it can be useful to poke different areas with a screwdriver to check the integrity.
Fill in Low Areas
In most places, spring brings plenty of rain. If there are currently low areas next to your foundation or around your yard, this excess rain can cause your yard to flood. By getting a jump on this issue by filling in those spots with soil, you’ll be able to avoid dealing with the consequences of damage or insect infestation during the summer.
Check the Gutters
There are two things that need to be done to gutters. First, look for any signs of damage. And second, they need to be cleaned out to ensure they don’t have any trouble handling the spring rain.
Although there are quite a few spring home maintenance tasks you should complete prior to the arrival of summer, as long as you call House Doctors for assistance, it won’t be hard at all for you to get them all handled properly.
